It is very important that the slide on your trombone moves freely. There are two major ways of lubricating the slide to provide this free flowing action - slide oil or slide grease and water. Slide oil, a thin liquid oil, is applied directly to the slide and is all that is necessary for most trombones. Slide grease has a thicker, semi-solid consistency. A thin coating of grease is applied to the slide, and then a spray bottle is used to put a coating of water on top. This gives the trombonist greater control of the friction of the slide.
